As before, rankings are basically weighted averages, taking into account results from the last 5 matches and goal differential for the last 5. The equation is
weekly rating = 0.67*L5Form + 0.33*L5GD where
L5Form = points from last match + 0.4*points from prior match + 0.3*points from prior match + 0.2*points from prior match + 0.1*points from prior match
L5GD = GD from last match + 0.4*GD from prior match + 0.3*GD from prior match + 0.2*GD from prior match + 0.1*GD from prior match.
Teams are then ranked based on their weekly rating.
Overall ratings are then determined by looking at the season long average of weekly rankings. A lower rating is better since it represents more time spent at the top. I may need to change this to an average of the last 5 or last 10 games as the season goes on so teams don't get stuck, but so far it's working pretty well.
Anyway, let's look at some early power rankings based on this last week.
Team | Rank | Overall Rating |
Kansas City | 1 | 2.000 |
San Jose | 2 | 5.286 |
Salt Lake City | 3 | 5.571 |
Seattle | 4 | 7.000 |
New York | 5 | 7.714 |
Houston | 6 | 9.571 |
Vancouver | 7 | 9.571 |
Colorado | 8 | 9.571 |
Chicago | 9 | 10.429 |
Dallas | 10 | 10.714 |
Columbus | 11 | 10.714 |
DC | 12 | 11.714 |
Chivas | 13 | 12.143 |
LA | 14 | 13.143 |

edit - swapped Colorado and Houston. Same point total, but Houston is playing better.
